Beach days from Amélie-les-Bains
Choose a beach day, not a beach checklist
The Mediterranean offers different experiences: a relaxed beach day around Argelès and Le Racou, town and harbour scenery in Collioure, or a longer Spanish coastal outing. Choose the experience first. Parking, approach on foot, wind and crowds can matter more than the apparent distance on a map. Leave room for shade and a meal instead of trying several distant beaches.
Swimming is a separate decision
A beach listing does not confirm supervised swimming, accessible bathing equipment, water quality or child-safe conditions. Check posted flags and local notices on the day. Supervision varies by season and specific section of beach; avoid transferring a town-wide statement to every cove. The original guide’s beach pins remain in the directory as reference locations, with unknown facilities excluded from confirmed filters.
Combine coast and food sensibly
Collioure can work as a town visit even when swimming is unsuitable. Leucate’s oyster cabins are another coastal destination, particularly for travellers interested in seafood rather than a purely sandy beach day. Choose one tasting venue, check its service and reservation arrangements, then add a coastal stop if conditions allow. A longer Costa Brava trip should keep the final return journey manageable.
Le Racou has a smaller seaside-neighbourhood feel, with low beach houses beneath the hills at the southern end of Argelès. Come for the beach, a meal and a slower coast day. It is also a useful reference point for choosing an official Côte Vermeille coastal walk.

Colourful waterfront houses, fishing boats and a church almost in the sea make Collioure one of the coast's most memorable stops. Explore the old lanes, look back across the harbour and add the royal castle if you want a fuller history day.
Roses combines a long waterfront, places to eat and a choice of beaches around its broad bay. It suits an easy Costa Brava coast day with time for a promenade after swimming. Choose your particular beach before leaving; the sheltered bay and the rocky coves offer different experiences.

Cadaqués offers whitewashed lanes, a waterfront made for lingering and a landscape closely connected with Dalí. Give the winding approach and the town a full coastal day. The artist's house at nearby Portlligat is a separate timed visit that should be booked in advance.
