Cycling and mountain biking near Amélie-les-Bains

Choose a gentle local greenway ride, a road circuit or a Haut-Vallespir mountain-bike outing. Compare published distances, climbing and grades before setting out.

Col d’Ares to Le Perthus through Vallespir

Start high on the French–Spanish border, descend through Prats-de-Mollo and Arles-sur-Tech, then follow the Tech valley past Amélie, Céret and Le Boulou. Finish at Col de Panissars, the Pirinexus border pass above Le Perthus. Plan transport to Col d’Ares and a pickup or overnight at the finish; this is a one-way journey.

Landscape
Mountain passes, woodland, riverside and Catalan towns

A staged touring journey, not a continuous traffic-free greenway. The published network is about 69 km; town connections depend on direction. Use signed cycle connections and obey one-way streets rather than reversing a downloaded loop.

Start: Col d’Ares border pass · arrange transport from the apartment

Finish: Col de Panissars, above Le Perthus — not the D900 town-centre crossing

Stages & route links
  1. Col d’Ares → Prats-de-Mollo → Arles-sur-Tech

Mountain-road section. The Centre’s Col d’Ares sheet describes the climb in the opposite direction; use it for terrain and pass information, not as reverse turn-by-turn directions.

    Col d’Ares route sheet ↗
  2. Arles-sur-Tech → Amélie → Céret → Le Boulou

The valley corridor shared with the Cerbère journey from the ALDI area onwards. The short Rivemale ride has its own separate card and file; it does not cover this entire stage.

    Short Rivemale section →
  3. Le Boulou → Col de Panissars / Le Perthus

The department lists about 15 km and 240 m of ascent for this final section. Panissars is the pass on Pirinexus, above the town. Check the official stage guide and forest-access notices.

Expect a mountain-road descent, shared roads and a final climb to the border. Check the forecast at Col d’Ares, daylight and current fire restrictions near Panissars before leaving. Mountain weather can differ sharply from Amélie. Current access ↗

From ALDI near Amélie to Argelès and Cerbère

Leave from the public cycle-path connection beside ALDI near the apartment, head along the lower Vallespir towards Céret and Le Boulou, then continue to Argelès-sur-Mer. Choose Argelès as a shorter finish, or arrange a separate, demanding road-cycling stage along the Côte Vermeille to Cerbère. The valley section overlaps the Col d’Ares–Le Perthus journey.

Grade
Experienced riders · hilly coastal continuation
Landscape
Tech valley, towns, Mediterranean coast and headlands

A touring outline with exact official section links, not a single downloadable track. Argelès–Cerbère is not a continuous greenway. The signed coastal cycling development towards Col de Banyuls is a different route and does not provide a flat bike path to Cerbère.

Start: Public cycle-path connection beside ALDI, Carrer del Pardal; not the shop interior or car park

Finish: Argelès-sur-Mer for the shorter option; Cerbère for the coastal continuation

Stages & route links
  1. ALDI / Amélie → Céret → Le Boulou

Join the lower-valley cycle corridor from the public path beside ALDI. This is the shared section with the border journey. Follow local signs through town crossings and one-way connections.

    Amélie–Céret official itinerary ↗
  2. Le Boulou → Argelès-sur-Mer

Use the direct lower route as the shorter finish. The official sheet is published Argelès station → Le Boulou: 19.4 km, about 2 h in that published direction. Its road and ford connections need checking for your direction; it is distinct from the longer EV8 foothill variant.

Exact 19.4 km route sheet ↗
  3. Argelès → Cerbère: separate coastal road stage

For strong road cyclists only. The official Tour de France PyMed sheet describes a much longer ride from Cerbère in the opposite direction, including the steep coastal roads: use it as a terrain reference, not as a ready-made Argelès–Cerbère GPX. Arrange the coastal route and your return before extending past Argelès.

    Official coastal terrain reference ↗

Shared roads, crossings and coastal climbs require confident riders. Avoid the high-speed D914 bypass and the pedestrian coastal footpath. Check wind, heat, daylight and current road restrictions. For a train return, check bicycle carriage on your chosen service before departure. Current access ↗

OsmAnd supports local GPX tracks and downloaded offline maps. Komoot and Ride with GPS also import GPX; their navigation and offline features depend on your account and purchased regions or plan. Prepare the route and maps before leaving coverage.

KML can be imported into Google My Maps on a computer as a route layer; it does not create turn-by-turn trail navigation in Google Maps. Offline guide pages and local route files are prepared in the installed guide; live basemaps, weather and external route sites still need internet.

Latest route review: 18 October 2026. Published files preserve the source geometry; this does not guarantee current ground conditions. Observe signs and closures. Vallespir access notices ↗
